A field team crawling a low passage on the Greece Albania border counted 111,000 spiders in a single spider web, and neither species in it had ever been recorded living in colonies

The passage is low enough to crawl and the air smells of rotten eggs.

A shallow stream runs along the floor, and the rock beside it is coated in a chalky white film.

Then the wall changes texture.

What covers it is not mineral. It is overlapping silk, funnel after funnel, for yards in every direction.

At the mouth of each funnel sits a spider.

There are, by the survey’s arithmetic, 111,000 of them.

Why a solitary hunter stops defending its corner

Both species here normally live alone. One is the common house spider, the funnel weaver in the corner of a garage, and the other is a much smaller sheet weaver.

Left to themselves they treat neighbors as competition or as food.

That behavior is not a personality. It is arithmetic about prey.

Where food is scarce, a neighbor costs you more than it brings, so the animal defends a territory and eats anything that enters.

Flip the prey supply to constant and abundant and the calculation inverts. Aggression burns energy and risks injury for no gain, and tolerating a neighbor becomes cheaper than fighting one.

Which is the leading explanation for what is on that wall, and it is a hypothesis rather than a demonstrated mechanism.

What the cave runs on instead of sunlight

No light reaches the colony, so nothing photosynthetic is at the base of this food chain.

The sulfidic stream feeds mats of sulfur oxidizing bacteria, which build their tissue from chemical energy rather than light. That is the white film on the rock.

Non biting midges breed in and graze on those mats, emerge as adults, and fly.

They fly into the silk, and the whole colony eats chemical energy at one remove.

The stream is the delivery system and the ceiling is the trap, which is why the web sits along that particular passage and not deeper in.

It is a complete ecosystem with no plant anywhere in it.

What the survey counted and measured

The cave was found by cavers in 2022, and a scientific team went in during 2024.

The silk covers about 1,140 square feet of wall and ceiling, roughly half a tennis court, and is described as likely the largest spider web on record.

The count came to about 69,000 house spiders and more than 42,000 of the smaller species.

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes in the spiders’ tissue confirmed the food chain, tracing their diet back through the midges to the bacteria rather than to anything blown in from outside.

Genetic work found the cave populations distinct from surface populations, with no sign of individuals moving in or out, and the cave spiders carried a less diverse gut microbiome.

The paper ran in a subterranean biology journal in October of 2025, with a dozen authors led from Romania and Albania.

What the count does not establish

The population figure is an estimate scaled up from sampled sections rather than a census, and the authors say so. Some funnels are likely abandoned.

The harder open question is behavioral. Nobody has shown these two species are cooperating.

They may simply be tolerating each other because the food supply makes conflict expensive, and separating active cooperation from passive coexistence needs observation across seasons rather than one visit.

It is also a single site. A pattern found in one cave is a description, not a rule, and the paper frames it that way.

What is not in doubt is that isolation underground reshapes animals fast, the same way an eyeless fish sitting in one Alabama cave went unnoticed for thirty years.

The lead author’s summary was modest, that the natural world still holds countless surprises for us.

A colony that sits on a national boundary

The entrance is on the Greek side and the deeper sections lie in Albania.

That is a practical problem rather than a poetic one. Any protection measure needs two governments, two permitting systems and a shared monitoring plan for a site neither country administers alone.

Cave systems are also unusually easy to wreck. A single change to the stream, a collapsed entrance or a run of visitors would take out the whole thing, because there is nowhere else for these populations to go.

The follow up work is under way and the questions are specific. Whether the colony persists year to year, how the two species divide the sheet, and whether the smaller one is prey, tenant or partner.

Small animals keep turning out to be poorly known, as an orange spider a sixteenth of an inch long recently demonstrated on a Japanese island.

An ordinary house spider, the one people sweep out of a garage, turns out to do something else underground that nobody had written down.

Which is the finding, more than the number. Not a new species, but a familiar one behaving in a way the textbooks ruled out.
