If you know Elon Musk, then you know that the tech billionaire will never shy away from ambitious ideas or expressions. Recently, he expressed something to do with solar energy being the future and his statement got the world buzzing. He said that the solution to our energy problems lies with an indicator of a civilization’s technological advancement based on energy consumption called the Kardashev Scale.

Elon Musk sees a time when a huge solar energy system housed in a spherical structure powers the entire planet, possibly bringing in a new era of sustainable energy generation. This concept is motivated by his long-term idea of solar energy being harnessed enough to be the main renewable source for the entire Earth, and his latest Tweet expresses just that, This is what he expressed on X,

“Once you understand Kardashev Scale, it becomes utterly obvious that essentially all energy generation will be solar. Also, just do the math on solar on Earth and you soon figure out that a relatively small corner of Texas or New Mexico can easily serve all US electricity.”

From science fiction to reality: Elon Musk’s solar vision and the Kardashev Scale

Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev developed the Kardashev Scale in 1964, which divides civilisations into those with planetary or interstellar energy capacities. The Kardashev Scale helps us picture advanced civilisations on our planet, as we have the potential to utilise sustainable energy and have control over our environment.

An Australian wind farm caused chaos when it switched from generating power to something quite different and ended up in court, and now operates under a nighttime ‘curfew’

Someone thought covering the Sahara with 10 million solar panels was a good idea. Now they’re creating dark rain clouds and reshaping the climate

A hydroelectric dam in the Amazon was operating normally until millions of fish began disappearing and it was suddenly abandoned overnight

Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev who developed the Kardashev scale in 1964, which divides civilisations into three primary groups, those are, Type I Civilisation – Planetary Civilisation, Type II civilisation – Stellar civilisation and Type III civilisation – Galactic civilisation, according to India Today. According to Elon Musk, we have only tapped about 0.73 of type I on this scale.

He adds on to say that if we can achieve a status of utilising all the energy available on the planet, it is one of the greatest things we can ever accomplish as a global community and he believes that it is very possible if we have the correct technological tools; it is inevitable. All Elon Musk wants to do is distribute energy on a large scale that can benefit everyone.

How would this system of energy operate?

Fundamentally, Elon Musk’s suggested system makes use of state-of-the-art developments in solar technology to build a vast, networked energy grid. To capture sunlight more effectively than the solar panels that are already in place on Earth, a huge array of solar satellites or orbital reflectors would be deployed. Geographical energy inequalities would be eliminated and continuous power generation would be ensured by wirelessly transmitting this energy to receiving stations around the world.

Solar energy has been, time and time again, hailed as the future of sustainable and renewable energy with the goal to replace fossil fuels, but the current technological tools and infrastructure have placed the developments on hold, to a certain extent, especially those that need a large scale to power the whole earth. However, Musk being Musk, aims to get rid of these limitations soon.

The future of energy according to Elon Musk’s perspective

If successfully implemented, Elon Musk’s desire to power the earth with solar energy can manifest. Elon Musk’s most recent invention may hold the secret to releasing renewable energy’s full potential as the globe struggles with energy crises and the pressing need for sustainable solutions.

Discussions concerning the possibility of advanced extraterrestrial civilisations and future energy technology have been sparked by the Kardashev scale, which has influenced both science fiction and scientific research. Additionally, it has guided researchers in their quest for technosignatures of advanced civilisations, influencing SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) initiatives.
