Say goodbye to steel, and the 10 times better strength for the weight in these Maryland softwood boards comes at roughly 10 times the price per pound

A board that looks ordinary sits on a workbench in Frederick, Maryland.

Run a hand along it and the grain feels normal, cool and smooth.

Press a thumbnail against it and the numbers stop being normal.

The wood inside was squeezed until its fibers collapsed together and locked into new bonds, leaving it several times denser than the timber it started as.

And that timber was nothing special.

The kind of softwood a mill turns out.

How a plain board ends up denser than the tree it came from

Wood is mostly cellulose fiber held in place by lignin, which works like a glue holding the fibers apart and gives timber its familiar springiness.

The process starts by taking some of that glue out. A chemical bath softens and partly removes the lignin and the hemicellulose around it, leaving the cellulose skeleton behind.

That skeleton is then pressed with heat at around 150 degrees, which is far cooler than most people expect from an industrial process.

Under that pressure the hollow cell walls buckle and fold flat. The gaps that made the wood light disappear, and the cellulose fibers end up packed against each other and bonded directly.

A plank comes out roughly a fifth of its original thickness.

The press removes the empty space and keeps the fiber.

What the finished material actually measures

The maker puts the strength to weight ratio at up to ten times that of steel, and tensile strength at up to 50 percent higher than steel on an equal cross section.

A spokesperson has described it as up to 50 percent stronger than steel in certain applications while being up to 80 percent lighter.

It carries a Class A fire rating without added flame retardant chemicals, which comes from the density rather than from a coating.

The company says it has run the process on 19 wood species, bamboo among them, and that the feedstock is fast growing and underused timber rather than prime lumber.

The underlying work was published in a major science journal in 2018 by a university team in the same state.

Ten times by weight, fifty percent by section.

The number that decides who actually buys it

Here is the figure that rarely travels with the strength claims.

The material has been priced at roughly 12 to 25 dollars a pound. Structural steel runs at something closer to one or two dollars a pound.

That is a gap of ten to twenty times on raw price against a strength advantage of ten times by weight, so the two roughly cancel before fabrication is paid for.

The company does not actually pitch it against structural steel on cost. It positions the boards against tropical hardwoods and engineered composites, where 20 dollars a pound is an ordinary number.

That is a real market and a defensible one. It is simply not the market the phrase stronger than steel puts in a reader’s head.

The comparison is technical. The competitor is decorative.

What the plant in Maryland can and cannot turn out

The facility runs to about 90,000 square feet and is rated at more than a million square feet of finished board a year.

That capacity was reported as fully allocated for its first year, which is a genuine signal of demand and also a reminder of how small the output is.

A million square feet is roughly the cladding for a few hundred houses. The company has talked about a later plant more than twenty times that size.

First products are interior finishes, then exterior siding, decking and fencing. Structural use waits on building code certification, which is measured in years rather than quarters.

The same story was told from the laboratory side when seven years of process work first produced a board that stopped a bullet.

The plant size and the annual capacity are set out on a university page.

Siding today, beams later, certification in between.

Where the claims outrun the paperwork

Two details in circulation do not hold up and both are worth fixing before they harden.

The executive most often quoted as chief executive is described by the company as a cofounder and executive chairman. A separate president was appointed in the spring of 2025 to run commercialization.

Funding above 50 million dollars is quoted too. The record holds a 15 million dollar series A plus a federal grant reported at 20 to 27 million, short of that number.

The carbon claim comes in two versions too, one putting emissions about 90 percent below steel and one calling the board carbon negative outright. Only one of those can be the headline.

Material claims are easier to make than to retire, as an effort to shred derelict boats into cement kiln feed has been finding out.

The price per pound, the executive titles and the first product schedule are set out by a business magazine.

The softwood boards are real, the press works, and the sentence doing the most work is the one about the price.
