General Motors (GM) has issued a major recall for multiple generations of Silverado HD trucks. This is about to be one of the biggest recalls of 2025, as the automaker will have to address trucks built between 2019 and 2024. Some other American brands have recalled their most famous models this year, too, such as Dodge and Ford, mainly their hybrid versions. The need to adapt and continue to use a model can bring a couple of problems from past generations, and GM has stumbled into one that can cause a fire in the worst scenario.

The process involves GM issuing a recall

Before putting a car on the market, the manufacturer must put the car through a rigorous review along with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to ensure the vehicle is ready and it’s safe to be on the roads. If not approved, the automaker should deal with the problem before another further review – this happened with Tesla before the launch of the robotaxi.

The same car model from different years sometimes comes out with the same problem. Ford recently recalled its most famous cars, such as the Bronco and the F150 from different generations, to deal with a software problem, a common reason why cars are being recalled in the past couple of months.

Not even Japanese manufacturers are getting away. Being notoriously famous for the revolutionary designs and creations, Japan-based automakers issuing recalls is not at the top of the minds of car lovers, but it can happen. Another big reason why many manufacturers are recalling thousands of cars in 2025 is the wrong assembly. Toyota recently issued a recall due to a loose bolt in some Corolla models.

Now, one of the most traditional and pioneering automakers in the US, General Motors, is recalling different generations of Silverados due to a problem with the brakes that might lead to more serious consequences.

GM recalls 62,000 vehicles from multiple model years

GM is recalling 62,000 Chevrolet Silverado trucks due to a brake issue that could cause fires. The problem is with the brake pressure sensor assembly, which can cause leaking fluid into the brake pressure switch and cause an electrical short. This can lead to overheating and, in the worst cases, a fire, whether the truck is parked or on the road.

General Motors informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about the recall in June and is urging owners to act quickly. No injuries have been reported, but GM is moving fast to prevent any risks. Most of the affected vehicles are 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 5500 HD trucks built between January 20, 2023, and March 19, 2024. The company estimates that around 10,097 of these could be at risk for the issue.

What other models were recalled by GM?

The recall includes 10,097 units of the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 5500 HD, followed by 7,339 units from the 2022 model year and 6,948 from 2019. For 2024, 6,632 units of the same model are affected, along with 6,424 from 2021 and 5,439 from 2020.

As for the Silverado 6500 HD, the recall covers 5,102 units from 2023, 3,635 from 2022, 2,248 from 2019, 2,191 from 2024, 2,135 from 2021, and 1,804 from 2020. The Silverado 4500 HD is also included, with 514 affected units from 2024, 483 from 2022, 415 from 2023, 389 from 2019, 360 from 2021, and 313 from 2020.

The owner should be careful when driving the car, or not drive at all

The manufacturer recommends that owners keep their trucks parked outside and away from buildings until the problem is fixed. Dealers will replace the faulty brake pressure switch wire harness at no cost. Notifications to owners are expected to start on July 28, 2025.

Models produced before 2019 aren’t included in the recall, as they follow a different design. In addition, some 2024 vehicles equipped with a brake switch wire harness that uses silicone sealant are also excluded. Earlier this year, GM recalled 10,000 Cadillac units due to a human error.
