Biologists ventured deep into a forest in Peru and found an ‘island in the sky’ where a strange kangaroo frog lives among the clouds

Frog found on island in the sky

Deep in the forests of Peru, an odd frog is living the high life.

In the iconic Andes of South America, researchers have found a strange kangaroo frog. However, this frog’s habitat is as strange as its biology. It lives within a cloud-covered ‘island in the sky’ that beggars belief. What is this hidden ecosystem high above Peru?

And how has this odd frog survived in such unique conditions?

How researchers found a frog unlike any other in the sky

Researchers have recently discovered a marsupial frog in northern Peru.

The region is known for its biological diversity. But this one takes the proverbial cake. The frog belongs to the genus Gastrotheca. They are known for carrying their eggs in a kangaroo-like pouch on their backs.

This allows the younglings of the frog to survive extreme conditions.

Conditions that normally would be fatal to such a delicate creature. The frog spends its life high in the clouds above Peru. These types of habitats are extremely difficult to reach, making studying the animals a challenge.

The discovery of this frog points to a hidden world above the iconic forest floor in Peru.

A hidden forest of life shaped over time by isolation

The steep slopes of the Andes can create notable isolated environments for some species.

Protecting these hidden ecological systems is paramount to our evolution. And we now have new technology to do just that. But how would we even reach so high up in the sky to protect the strange kangaroo frog?

Forget protecting it; we have struggled to even study this animal.

Forests up in the clouds are unique, to say the least. These parts of the world are normally separated by massive valleys and ridges. This limits the interaction between different species.

They are forced into an evolutionary isolation corner, so to speak.

Scientists believe that this isolation drives forward rapid biological diversification. Many frog species can only be found in the Andes, pointing to the region’s biological significance.

Isolation and other factors can force animals to evolve particularly unique traits and features.

Researchers were finally able to get as high as necessary to study this odd frog. And they found it is living on an ‘island in the sky’ that beggars belief. These delicate parts of the world need to be studied extensively.

The study, “A new species of marsupial frog (Hemiphractidae: Gastrotheca) from the Andes of northern Peru and first country record of Gastrotheca turnerorum,” published in Zootaxa, explains the findings.

An island in the sky that reveals how animals adapt to their surroundings

The most important factor in the study was not the frog itself.

It is the very ‘island in the sky’ that it lives in that is so astonishing. The clouds can act as a barrier for other species. Forcing the animals that are capable of living there into evolutionary isolation.

Conservation efforts have focused on building man-made structures to allow species to thrive.

But this natural ‘island in the sky’ is remarkably unique. The frog is so much more than just a newly discovered species. It points to a hidden world in the sky we know very little about.

As climate change becomes all too perilous, these ‘islands in the sky’ face increasing dangers.

Climate change has affected several other species around the world. And if nothing is done, these unique sky-high ecosystems could vanish. Leaving behind no possibility to find new species in their midst.

The discovery of this new frog species proves that the Earth still has many secrets. And we need to study them before they vanish without a trace.
