A 564 foot freighter sat on an uncharted shoal in the Northwest Passage for 33 days, but what set the deadline was the ice closing rather than the hole in its hull

A grounding in most of the world is an expensive inconvenience.

Tugs arrive within hours, a salvage contract is signed by lunchtime, and the hard part is arguing about who pays.

In the Canadian Arctic none of that machinery exists, because nothing is nearby.

The nearest heavy tug may be a week’s steaming away, the nearest port with a crane is further, and every piece of equipment has to be sailed in.

That alone would make a salvage slow rather than impossible.

What makes it impossible is the calendar.

The clock is the freeze, not the damage

An Arctic salvage operates inside a window that closes on its own schedule regardless of how the work is going.

Open water in those straits lasts a matter of weeks in late summer, and once new ice begins to form the support vessels have to leave or risk being held themselves.

A ship still aground when that happens does not get rescued in the spring. It gets frozen in place through a winter of moving pack ice grinding against a hull that is already sitting on rock.

So the engineering question is not whether a refloat is possible. It is whether it can be finished before the water hardens.

Every decision downstream of that follows from it, including the order the work is done in and how much risk is accepted at each step.

The deadline is set by weather.

Lightening a ship with no port to use

The physics of getting a grounded ship off a shoal are simple and the logistics are not.

A hull sits on the bottom because it weighs more than the water it is displacing at that depth, so the fix is to make it weigh less.

Pumping ballast helps a little. The real weight is the cargo, and moving cargo requires another ship alongside and cranes that work in open water.

In a harbor that is routine. On an exposed Arctic strait with no shelter, it means holding two vessels in position beside each other for days while boxes go across.

Everything depends on the weather staying flat, and the weather in that place has no obligation to do so.

Delay costs days off the window.

Thirty three days off the Boothia Peninsula

The ship went aground on September 6 of 2025 in Franklin Strait, on a rocky shoal off the Boothia Peninsula, having deviated from the usual westerly track.

She is 564 feet long, Dutch flagged, rated at 21,359 tons deadweight, and was carrying industrial carbon blocks from a Chinese port to Quebec.

Damage was confined to the hull plating and ballast tanks with some water ingress, and remote surveys found the fuel tanks and cargo holds intact, so there was no pollution and no injuries.

Salvage brought in a tug from New Brunswick, an ice class cargo vessel from the Baltic by way of Greenland, and an icebreaker carrying the specialist equipment.

More than 5,000 tons of cargo went across to two other ships before the hull would lift.

She came off 33 days later.

Uncharted does not mean unknown

The word doing the most work in every account of this is uncharted, and it deserves unpacking.

Large parts of the Canadian Arctic have never been surveyed to modern standards. Much of what exists comes from lead line soundings taken decades ago along single tracks, with everything between those tracks inferred rather than measured.

A chart there is not wrong so much as thin, and the blank space between survey lines is where a shoal sits unrecorded, in the way that a load with only one viable route or a decision taken without the evidence depends on what was surveyed.

Which is also why the deviation from the usual lane matters more than it would elsewhere. The common track is not safer because it is marked. It is safer because other hulls have been along it.

The national safety board opened an investigation and has not reported on the cause.

The chart was not the problem.

The route opens faster than the survey

The underlying tension here is that traffic through these waters is growing while the mapping behind it is not.

Ice retreat lengthens the season every year, and a longer season attracts ships that would otherwise have gone around, including bulk carriers on commercial schedules rather than research vessels on flexible ones.

Surveying an Arctic strait properly is slow, expensive work that can only be done during the same short window everybody else wants to sail in.

The same vessel went through again the following year without incident, on a visibly different track, which the trade coverage pointed out.

The Northwest Passage is open more often than it is measured.

That gap is the hazard.
