The boat runs out at first light.
Traps go over the side in shallow brown water, a few boat lengths off the tangle of roots, and they come back up with blue crab and small fish in them.
Nobody thinks about the trees.
The trees are scenery from the water, a grey brown wall of prop roots standing in their own shade, and the fishing happens out in front of them.
That geography is the entire point.
What makes this fishery work is not the forest behind the roots but the narrow strip where roots meet water, and the two are very different assets.
Why the edge is worth more than the forest
Juvenile fish need cover they can hide inside.
A prop root tangle standing in shallow water provides exactly that, a maze that a small fish can move through and a larger predator cannot follow into.
The interior of the forest does not qualify.
It is mud and root and periodic tide rather than permanent water, so the nursery function belongs to a band only yards deep along the seaward margin.
That makes shape matter more than size.
A mile of that margin holds somewhere between two and four acres of usable nursery water, which means a long thin forest can out produce a wide compact one covering the same total ground.
What the fishery looks like
It is small boats and traps rather than trawlers.
Thirteen fishing regions across four Mexican states, working the same margins their families have worked, landing fish and blue crab into local markets.
The share is larger than anyone expected.
Species that depend on those roots make up 32 percent of all small scale fishery landings in the region, which is roughly a third of the catch traced back to one habitat.
The volume is not trivial either.
Averaged across five years, mangrove related landings came to about 12,700 tons a year and put in the region of 19 million dollars a year into fishing communities.
How the number was reached
Researchers matched official landings against the length of mangrove edge.
Not the area of forest, the length of the fringe, region by region, which is what turned a general belief that mangroves help fisheries into a measured slope.
The median works out at 15,200 dollars an acre.
The range across regions runs from about 10,000 to 20,000 dollars an acre of fringe, every year, from fish and crab landings and nothing else counted.
Everything left out is worth saying.
No timber, no carbon, no tourism, no water filtration, and no storm protection went into that figure, which makes it a floor rather than a total.
What the same ground was officially worth
Mexican law had a price for destroying it.
Roughly 410 dollars an acre, which is what a developer converting mangrove to shrimp ponds or hotel frontage was liable for.
Against 15,200 dollars a year, that is not a discount.
It is a rounding error, and the researchers put it more precisely by discounting a decade of fishery value and finding it came to more than 300 times the official cost of the same ground.
The law was written for land, not for water.
A price set per unit of ground assumes the value sits in the ground, while everything measured here sits in the water in front of it, which no land valuation was ever built to see.
Undervalued habitat is a pattern, not an accident.
A grounding that destroyed 100,000 coral colonies in Hawaii settled at about seven dollars per animal, which is the same arithmetic in a different ocean.
The finding is now old enough to have been acted on, and the paper that produced it is still the standard citation.
The bigger ledger nobody bills for
Fisheries are the small half of what these forests do.
The roots dissipate wave energy before it reaches anything solid, which is a service with a value that only appears when a storm arrives and finds it missing.
The global figure is enormous.
Across some 435,000 miles of coastline, one analysis put mangrove flood protection at 65 billion dollars a year, with 15 million people flooded annually if the forests were gone.
It concentrates near cities.
Some short urban stretches of coast draw more than 250 million dollars a year in avoided flood damage from the mangroves standing in front of them.
Coastal edges are quietly expensive to lose, which is why crews will spend days pulling creosote pilings out of a beach for the sake of herring eggs.
None of it appears on a balance sheet.
Which is how a stretch of the Gulf of California keeps getting converted at a price set for empty land, by people who are not wrong about the law.
